I used the free time to drink coffee, lambdafy some code, try out an Occulus Rift from the Cologne city library (who are pretty rad tech-wise), found out that I had won a RasPi yesterday, drank more coffee and had a few nice chats.ġ1:00 another keynote, from a red hat guy on where Java comes from and goes to from a middleware perspective.ġ3:00 The second talk from Daniel Mittendorfer about JMH. For a welcome change, the talk was shorter than advertised, and was also pretty high level, so there were next to no questions. Decided to jog from hotel to Phantasialand instead.ĩ:00 A talk about asynchronous testing. Anyhow, a lot of talking to people and meeting known and unknown faces.Ģ0:00 Concluding a fun and interesting first day (need to check in at the hotel) - I'm a bit sad that I missed the party, but as I am awake sind 3am, I wouldn't have lasted very long anyway.ħ:00 Unfortunately, I overslept and missed the jogging. It was nice enough, but I got the slight feeling of being on a promotional trip. Some JMH examples and explanation of hardware effects (pointer chasing, false sharing, branch mispredict).ġ6:00 Went to the Java User Group Café for some social activities. This is the guy who has the trademark for "measure, don't guess".ġ5:00 A talk from Daniel Mittendorfer about small things with big performance impact. His talk however is absolutely worth the wait. comparator chaining vs.reverse()), streamParallel() only helps in rare instances (but it's cheap, so those rare instances are awesome), measure before and after changing.ġ3:00 Kirk Pepperdine is just a bit late for his much anticipated presentation on performance optimization. A lot of practical advice from porting a (lambda-using) C# app to Java: Don't go overboard, some things aren't what they seem (e.g. Rafael Winterhalter (the creator of byte buddy) gave an engaging and very understandable talk.ġ2:00 Peter Lawrey gave a great account of their usage (and learnings from that) of lambdas. I'm not too impressed, but it was a good intro nonetheless.ġ1:00 the 'understanding Java byte code' session I've been looking forward to the whole morning. It was hard to decide, because there are 100 talks in the space of two days.

People here are friendly.Ĩ:30 apparently there's no WiFi, and mobile data is a bit spotty (and dog slow).ĩ:00 The keynote - video didn't work, the speaker (Markus Langergren) was a little helpless at first, but they found a workaround. After some chaos and smiling for the camera, I was free to enter nonetheless. The badge scanners at the entrance don't work (yet - update: They were fixed 15 minutes later). It is my first time at a JavaLand conference, so bear with me if I write things you already know.Ĩ:00: I've arrived. This is my personal account of JavaLand 2015.
